Metal is known for it’s aggression yet it is also known for its fans. Metal has the best and most loyal fans out there and when times are tough they come together to help resolve important issues.
LOM spokesmodel from Arizona, Mischief Madness, was inspired by Robb Flynn’s “Racism in Metal” video because it addressed an issue that was dividing the metal community. After Phil Anselmo’s racist comment at the Ride For Dime early this year, rather than to let the matter be hushed away, Flynn decided to publicly address the problem so that people can become aware of their actions and those of others within the metal community.
The response was inspiring because we all agreed that racism has no place within Metal and will take the necessary steps to ensure an embarrassment like that does not happen again.
Now we come to you as women who work in the Metal scene who are seeking to shed light on another important issue- MISOGYNY IN METAL, which we feel is a more prevalent topic in this male-dominated industry.
As Ladies Of Metal, we are always at the forefront of promoting every major tour, supporting the bands, buying their merch, and helping the metal scene grow! We are strong-willed, independent, and professional in everything that we do because we have to be in order to combat this kind of behavior.
Take a moment to read our LOM babe's blog about her experiences as a music reporter and be sure to stay tuned for her next interview with Veil of Maya.
I have interviewed hundreds of bands yet it was always with the help and guidance of my producer who is male. I noticed that without my producer or any other male figure accompanying me to the venue, I would found myself being treated by band members with less respect than I deserved. They assumed I was a groupie and would proceed to hit on me; once I would disclose my identity that I am with the Press, they would then treat me like the plague.
I recently started handling some of my own PR and, although I follow the same protocol that my producer has taught me to follow, I find myself struggling to receive the same respect and I attribute it to the preconceived misogyny within the scene. As a woman, I feel like I have to work twice as hard to be held in the same regard as my male counterparts.
I have had bands purposely ruin my interviews and laugh about it, as if my work was nothing to be taken seriously. I have had tour managers disrespect me and assume, again, that I was just some dumb girl trying to get backstage with the band. I have been brushed aside by bands who were dissatisfied with my inabilities to provide them drugs/alcohol, even when we had a confirmed interview appointment scheduled for that day. Yet, I continue to impress every band I interview with my passion of metal and knowledge about their music…may I say even “surprise”?
Many Metal band members and fans are guilty of the assumption that the women that attend shows are only there to hook up with other guys, as if it is unbelievable to think that a woman would like metal out of her own volition. The women of Metal are just as aggressive and equality passionate about the music as any man and it sad to see very few women dominate the industry as musicians, reporters, producers, etc; what is even more sad is the men within the industry that continue to treat women with contempt for wanting to have the same skills and professions in the same field as they do.
The one thing that we all have in common is our love for metal. We all began as outcasts and music was the channel that allowed us to express ourselves. Metal is the big “fuck you” to the establishment and that includes saying “no” to the preconceived notions of racism, misogyny, homophobia, and class wars.
The only way to combat the misogyny within the metal community is with active feminism, which is not exclusive to women, and equality among all people. There is no place within our community for this backwards thinking and we must all stand in solidarity for the women in Metal should be celebrated and applauded for braving the current that works against them."- Original Post Taken from Mischief Madness' Tumblr
